Social media manager tools: the best tools for social media managers, priced and grouped by job
There is no single best social media manager tool, and the roundups that pick one are answering a question nobody has. A social media manager does five separate jobs: getting posts scheduled and out the door, writing the posts in the first place, cutting and captioning video, growing one specific network, and reporting on what happened. Almost no product does more than two of those well, which is why most managers end up paying for two or three tools rather than one.

The short answer
Social media manager tools split into five jobs: scheduling and publishing, writing and repurposing, video and clips, single-network growth, and analytics or listening. Verified in August 2026, entry prices run from $5 a channel at Buffer to $99 a seat a month at Sprout Social. The number that decides your bill is not the sticker price but the unit each vendor charges for, because a channel, a brand, a workspace, a seat and a social profile are five different things and the same 12 accounts can cost $10 a month or $299 depending on which unit you are buying.
This page groups the tools by the job they actually do and puts a verified entry price next to each one. Every price below was read off the vendor's own pricing page between August 9 and August 22, 2026, not copied from another comparison, because a large share of the published roundups are quoting plan names and prices that were retired months ago. Where our figure disagrees with what most articles say, we say so and show the date we checked.

Why it works
What you get
The tools social media managers actually pay for, grouped by job, with entry prices we checked on each vendor page.
Grouped by job, not ranked
Five jobs sit behind this category and almost no product does more than two of them well. Buy for the job costing you the most hours, not for the longest feature list.
The unit decides the bill
Channel, brand, workspace, seat or profile. The same 12 accounts and 3 people cost $40 a month on one tool and $237 on another purely because of how the vendor counts.
Prices we checked ourselves
Every figure was read off the vendor pricing page in August 2026, with the date shown. Four of them disagree with what most published roundups still say.
What it handles
One input, rewritten for every channel
Drop in your source and Adapter.to reshapes it into channel-native posts, each with the right tone, length and format. You pick a tone, edit anything, and ship.
- Turns a blog post, video, podcast, newsletter or URL into channel-native posts
- Fills the writing job that schedulers treat as a metered credit add-on
- Runs alongside Buffer, Zoho Social, Sendible or whichever scheduler you already pay for
- Writes for X, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, email and your newsletter from one source
- Keeps your voice through a tone setting instead of producing the same template every time
Why Adapter.to
One tool that adapts any source to every channel
Not a video clipper, not a single-channel writer, and not copy-pasting between ChatGPT tabs. Any source in, every format out, each rewritten natively, in your voice.
Any source in
A blog URL, a YouTube video, a podcast, a newsletter or a pasted draft. One input is all it takes to feed every channel you publish on.
Every format out
An X thread, a LinkedIn post, an IG caption, a TikTok script, a newsletter, an email and more, each shaped to the platform, not the same text reflowed.
In your voice
Set a brand voice and pick a tone, then edit anything before you post. Every channel sounds like you, professional, casual or bold.
What tools do social media managers use?
Most social media managers run a stack of two or three tools, not one. The common shape is a social media scheduler that handles publishing and the calendar, a writing tool that produces the posts, and either a video tool or an analytics tool depending on whether the account is video-led or reporting-led. Agencies add a fourth for client approvals.
The reason the stack exists is that the categories are genuinely different products. A scheduler is a publishing pipeline: connections to each network, a queue, a calendar, an approval flow and a record of what went out. A writing tool is a text engine. A clip tool is a video editor. Buying a scheduler and expecting it to write well is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category, because the AI features bolted onto schedulers are usually metered credits producing generic copy, and you discover it after you have paid annually.
The practical test before you buy anything: write down which of the five jobs is currently costing you the most hours this month. Buy for that job. A manager who spends six hours a week writing and forty minutes scheduling should not be shopping for a better calendar.
What is the best tool for social media management?
For scheduling alone, Buffer is the cheapest credible entry at $5 a channel a month, and Zoho Social is the best value once you need many networks under one brand at $10 a month billed annually for 12 channels. For agencies running separate clients, Sendible and Planable price by workspace with unlimited users, which stops being expensive the moment your team is larger than three people. For enterprise reporting, Sprout Social remains the standard and charges accordingly at $99 a seat a month.
None of those are the best tool for writing, which is the job that actually eats the week. Schedulers treat content generation as a feature, so it arrives as a credit allowance attached to a plan you bought for a different reason. Zoho Social gives Standard users 40 AI credits a month. Later sells credits in packs. That is a reasonable way to sell an add-on and a poor way to run your content.
Adapter.to sits in the writing job specifically. You give it something you already made, a blog post, a recorded video, a podcast episode, a newsletter or just a URL, and it rewrites that source into channel-native versions for X, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, your newsletter and email. It does not schedule, so it runs alongside whichever scheduler you already pay for rather than replacing it.
How much do social media management tools cost?
Entry prices in August 2026 run from free to $99 a seat a month, but the spread is misleading because the vendors are not selling the same unit. Buffer charges per channel. Zoho Social and Metricool charge per brand. Sendible and Planable charge per workspace. Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Agorapulse charge per seat. SocialBee, Vista Social and Later charge per social profile. Publer charges per connected account on a sliding rate.
Run one realistic setup through those units and the range is startling. Take one business with 12 connected accounts and three people who need logins. On Zoho Social that is one brand, 12 channels, and Premium at $40 a month billed annually covers the three seats. On Sprout Social the same setup is three seats at $79 a month annually, which is $237. On Buffer Essentials it is 12 channels at $5, which is $60, with unlimited users. Same business, same accounts, and the invoice ranges from $40 to $237 purely on how the vendor counts.
The second thing that moves the bill is what a unit contains. Sendible sells workspaces that hold exactly six social profiles each, so you cannot buy a single extra profile. Later's social sets hold at most one profile per network, so two Instagram accounts consume two sets. Zoho Social defines a brand as one profile per network with the same effect. Anyone running several accounts on one platform, which describes most agencies and most multi-location businesses, pays roughly double what the pricing page implies.
Do social media managers need more than one tool?
Usually yes, and the honest reason is that the all-in-one products are strong at their original job and thin at the ones they added later. A scheduler that added AI writing in 2024 is still a scheduler. A clip tool that added captions is still a clip tool. You can run a single-tool stack and many solo creators do, but it means accepting whichever job that tool does badly.
The exception worth naming: if you publish to two or three accounts and post a few times a week, one scheduler with a free or cheap tier genuinely is enough, and adding tools is overhead. Buffer's free plan covers three channels. Metricool and Zoho Social both keep permanent free tiers. Below roughly five accounts and ten posts a week, the stack is the problem, not the solution.
Above that, the split that saves the most time is writing separated from publishing, because writing is the job that scales worst with volume. Scheduling ten posts takes barely longer than scheduling three. Writing ten takes three times as long as writing three. That is why a repurposing step, where one source becomes every channel, changes the week more than a better calendar does.
What are the best social media management tools for agencies?
Agencies should buy social media management software for agencies on the pricing unit before the feature list, because agency bills are driven by client count and headcount rather than by features. The tools that price by workspace with unlimited users are structurally cheaper for a growing team: Sendible from $35 a month for one workspace of six profiles, and Planable at $39 a workspace on Basic. Both let you add a strategist, two writers and three client-side approvers without the invoice moving.
The tools that price per seat invert that. Agorapulse charges $99 a user a month on Standard and caps all three named tiers at 10 social profiles, so a five-person agency pays $495 a month before it has connected an eleventh profile. Sprout Social behaves the same way at $99 a seat. Those are reasonable products bought by teams who need the reporting, and they are the wrong shape for an agency whose headcount is growing faster than its client list.
Watch for two traps. White label is almost always a paid add-on rather than a plan feature, and Sendible quotes it at $349 a month for Elite and $800 for Enterprise, which is roughly $50 on top of the base plan. And several vendors define a client unit narrowly: a Sendible workspace is six profiles, so a client with seven accounts consumes two. Our content repurposing for agencies page covers the writing side of the same problem.
What are the best social media management tools for small business?
A small business posting to four or five accounts is the one case where the cheap end genuinely works. Buffer Essentials at $5 a channel is $25 a month for five accounts with unlimited users, and Buffer added volume discounting in 2026 so channels above ten cost less than the first ten. Zoho Social at $10 a month billed annually gives one brand 12 channels and a single seat. Metricool and Publer both keep permanent free tiers that cover a small account list.
What small businesses consistently overbuy is analytics. The reporting suites are priced for teams that present numbers to a client or a board every month. If nobody in your business reads a social report, the native analytics inside each platform is sufficient and the $99 tier is buying you a document nobody opens.
What they consistently underbuy is the writing. The reason a small business social account goes quiet is almost never that scheduling was hard. It is that somebody has to sit down and write eight posts, and that person also runs the business. That is the specific gap a repurposing tool fills, by turning something you already produced into the week of posts instead of asking you to start from an empty box.
Which social media tool prices are wrong in most comparison articles?
A surprising number, and it matters because a wrong entry price changes which tool you shortlist. Checking each vendor page directly through August 2026 turned up four disagreements with the published consensus, all of them in the same direction: the articles are quoting older, cheaper lineups.
Sendible is the worst case. Most page-one comparisons still describe plans called Creator, Traction, Scale and Advanced, with user caps of 1, 4, 7 and 80. Those plan names are retired. Entry is $35 rather than $29, and user caps are gone entirely, so every tier including the $35 one now includes unlimited users. Vista Social is the second case: the free plan and the $39 Standard tier no longer exist and entry is $79, yet current-dated roundups still list both.
The smaller two are worth knowing if you are budgeting. Buffer is $5 a channel, not the $6 several 2026 articles quote. And annual discount badges are frequently exact on one tier and wrong on the rest: Zoho Social advertises "save 33%" but that figure is exact only on Standard, while Professional saves 25 percent and Premium 38.5 percent. Every price in the table below carries the date we checked it, so you can see how stale it is by the time you read this.
